9:38

The 9:38 scheme is a non-denominational ministry training strategy named from Matthew 9 verse 38: ‘Ask the Lord of the harvest therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field’.

Its aim is to help people who are considering full-time paid gospel ministry, even if their thinking is at an early stage. The great advantage lies in having a network of like-minded people eager to serve Christ and explore ministry. There is also personal support and guidance from experienced evangelical ministers, regional events to inform and equip for various ministries and annual conferences for considering the requirements of gospel ministry. 9:38 also encourages the development of apprenticeship schemes such as our own.

Apprenticeship Scheme

The apprenticeship scheme is an opportunity for men and women to gain experience of full-time “paid” gospel ministry. At Christ Church Mayfair, our apprentices generally join us for two years to develop their knowledge of Scripture, godliness of character and skills in ministry.

The scheme aims to provide either a useful step on the way to full-time theological education, or to equip Christians for a lifetime of service in their local churches. They are part of the national “9:38” initiative to encourage ministry training.

Training has three elements:
Knowledge – a basic grounding in systematic theology and how to apply it to issues of ministry, through learning on the job with staff (each apprentice has a staff trainer who acts as a mentor) and one morning a week at the Apprentice Workshop. At the Workshop apprentices give expository talks and receive feedback, as well as being guided in their reading of seminal Christian books and having the opportunity to air questions arising from ministry each week.

Character - the Bible is clear that along with the ability to teach sound doctrine and refute error, the foremost prerequisite for church leaders is godliness. This requires honesty in addressing areas such as holiness (e.g. prayerfulness, personal Bible reading), teamwork (e.g. cooperation with and support of others in their ministry, acceptance of both leadership and supporting roles), faithfulness (e.g. commitment to God, his word and his people) and humility (e.g. willingness to perform menial and unglamorous tasks, willingness to change behaviour and beliefs in accordance with God’s word).

Skills - The main skill areas the Apprenticeship Scheme seeks to address are teaching (e.g. preparing and giving a Bible talk, 1-1 discipleship, leading group bible studies), leadership (e.g. organizing an event or meeting, gathering/training/monitoring a team), evangelism (e.g. caring and praying for the lost, understanding and explaining the gospel without using jargon, giving evangelistic talks), strategy (e.g. grasp something of the national and denominational Christian scene and the “needs of the hour”, identify and resolve conflicts of priority within church ministry), and people (e.g. dealing with conflict and celebrating success, listen to and empathise with people).

Apprentices are a great joy to the whole church family and in turn, tell the church family it is a great joy to serve and grow.

Church Music Apprentices 2010

• Are you passionate about helping people praise Jesus?
• Are you personally committed to Christ-centred and Biblical worship?
• Do you have musical gifts that could be developed to serve the wider Church?

We are looking for three of four apprentices to join us for one to two years. Apprentices will attend the Cornhill Training Course and be trained to lead congregational music in different styles (we are specifically looking for guitarists and keyboard players, though we are willing to consider any vocalist or instrumentalist).

They will also be involved in gospel ministry in a thriving church community.

Our long term aim is to equip the wider Church with godly musicians who are able to handle Scripture faithfully and music responsibly.

London Men’s Convention

The London Men’s Convention is an annual event organised by an interdenominational group of evangelical ministers and leaders. 4,000 men gather from all over London and the south of England to sing, pray and hear the Scriptures taught to them. The organizers are convinced that Bible teaching is the only thing able to thoroughly equip a man ‘for every good work.’ (2 Tim 3:17.) Speakers in recent years have included John Stott, Tim Keller, Al Stewart and Vaughan Roberts.

A group from Christ Church Mayfair usually attends and the next London Men’s Convention will be advertised in church in the run-up to it.

London Women’s Convention

The London Women’s Convention is an annual event for Christian women, who, while tackling the many roles they fulfil, want to follow Jesus Christ and work out exactly what that means today.

It is also an expression of unity amongst women from the capital and beyond, who trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour, and seek to live by what the Bible teaches. Its aim is to promote the gospel of Jesus Christ, lived out in the lives of Christians and held out to others in this needy country.

Christ Church Mayfair is pleased to support the London Women’s Convention and a group of women from church usually attend.

Ministries of Mercy

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:37
‘Ministries of Mercy’ is the collective name for a number of projects providing practical help and support to the community. The projects are run by various churches from within the Co-Mission network.

The name ‘Ministries of Mercy’ comes from the parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus tells us to be like the Good Samaritan, who provided shelter, finances, medical care and friendship to the man he came across in need on the Jericho road.

We at Christ Church Mayfair are therefore committed to supporting and equipping the church family to respond to the different needs of those we come across, whether they are on our doorstep or on the other side of the world. Underpinning all our projects is a desire that our practical acts of love extend to meeting people’s deepest need of reconciliation with God. Therefore in all our endeavours we aim, where appropriate, to communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ.
