For this Advent season we offer you a Bible reading for each day which points to the first coming of the Lord Jesus at Christmas and his return in glory!
1The LORD had said to Abram, "Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you.
2"I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
3I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you."
A few comments
Ever since Adam & Eve’s fatal act, every man and woman has faced a 3-fold alienation: we are cut off from God – at war with him; we find friction in our relationships as we use and get used by one another; and even the natural world no longer feels like home – for all its beauty it is also full of danger.
But God makes a promise to one man that will bring restoration for all mankind – a place that will be home; a people that are together; and best of all, knowing God in blessing not judgement. As the Old Testament unfolds, we see God’s unbreakable commitment to fulfil these promises, and we wonder how God will undo the work of sin and death through one of Abraham’s descendants.
Point for Prayer
Thank God for his initiative – the salvation of humans and restoration of the world is his plan. Thank him too for his faithfulness to this plan in spite of everthing.
