Advent Readings: Day 15

For this Advent season we offer you a Bible reading for each day which points to the first coming of the Lord Jesus at Christmas and his return in glory!

Luke 1:1 - 4

1Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eye-witnesses and servants of the word. 3Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

A few comments

‘Santa Claus. The Easter Bunny. Jesus Christ. All the same.’

‘Jesus is a myth for pre-scientific people only taken seriously by the very gullible or the desperately simple.’ These days people know very little about the Biblical Christmas story. But what they do know for certain is that it didn’t happen. Probably.

It’s just a myth, a parable made up by the apostles to enhance the reputation of the great teacher Jesus. They probably never meant for us to read it so literally anyway.

But then you read Luke 1:1-4. This is not an allegory, a myth or a parable. It is history. Exhaustively researched, meticulously compiled, and written to provide concrete evidence for a sceptical audience. It was not written hundreds of years later by powerful church factions. It was written by a man who lived at the same time as Jesus and who interviewed the hundreds of eye witnesses to Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. The Jesus of the Bible is the Jesus of history.

Point for Prayer

Thank God for the careful work of the gospel writers and for the reliability of their testimony. Pray that our trust would deepen as we read the accounts of Jesus’ birth again.
