Dig Deeper: Prayer

“Dig Deeper” (Beynon/Sach) is one of the best books you’ll ever open, because it gives you tools to read the best book you’ll ever open. Get a copy from the church bookstall and start digging!

Since tonight is the church prayer meeting, it seems sensible to think about the tool that under-girds all the others, and gives us any hope at all of rightly hearing God speak as we read the Bible - prayer. The Bible is God's book, and to understand it rightly, and hear his voice through it, we are utterly dependent on him. So we pray.

To help us with that, look at the verses here and think about: How do these convince us that we need to pray as we open the Bible? How do they help us know what to pray as we open the Bible?

Jesus said: "Apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5)

Paul wrote: "Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this" (2 Timothy 2:7)

Bonus link: why does John Piper pray "IOUS" for himself every morning? You can read more about these on pages 150-153 of When I Don't Desire God, which is available as a free PDF here.
