Dig Deeper: Repetition

“Dig Deeper” (Beynon/Sach) is one of the best books you’ll ever open, because it gives you tools to read the best book you’ll ever open. Get a copy from the church bookstall and start digging!

Last night we Charlie told us about the repetition tool. The repetition tool. The repeti... Sorry, he already did that gag! The premise is simple - when a Bible writer uses one word, phrase or idea repeatedly, they're probably trying to emphasise something. So in John 5 we saw the words Father and Son over and over, giving us a clue that John is teaching us about the relationship between the Father and the Son.

Here's an example to give a go:

Read Genesis 1:1-2:3

  1. Which words and phrases are repeated in this chapter? (There are a lot!)
  2. What do you think the author is trying to emphasize by repeating each one?
  3. Bonus question: Is there any significance to the number of times that any of them are repeated?
