Dig Deeper: The Narrator’s Comment tool

“Dig Deeper” (Beynon/Sach) is one of the best books you’ll ever open, because it gives you tools to read the best book you’ll ever open. Get a copy from the church bookstall and start digging!

Yesterday, we heard about the Narrator’s Comment tool, when the narrator takes a moment to stop the story, and explain to us what’s going on. If we miss it, we might draw all the wrong conclusions.

Here’s an example for you to work through.

Read Matthew 2:1-14 (NOT verse 15!)

  1. What do you think Matthew is telling us about Jesus?
  2. What do you think Matthew is telling us about Herod’s plot?

Read Matthew 2:15 (the narrator’s comment)

  1. Now what do you think Matthew is telling us about Jesus and about Herod’s plot?
  2. How has the narrator’s comment helped you to interpret the story correctly?
  3. Bonus question: How does this change the way you read Matthew 4:1-11? Thoughts are welcome in the comments!
